Dead Sea Scrolls Transcriptions: Wadi Sdeir Genesis

Just a quick update today. I was asked to do this for a friend, so I took the time today to get it done. It’s not all that large, mainly due to the fact that the manuscripts found are essentially 4 fragments of a much larger scroll that unfortunately has been lost over time.

But who knows. Maybe some more pieces from this manuscript shall be identified from the several hundred from the Dead Sea Scrolls that they’ve yet to identify

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Hosea Text

A little treat before the Feast of Trumpets (Also known as Taruw’ah): Complete transcriptions of all the manuscripts found among the Dead Sea Scrolls containing text from the book of Hosea.

This also means that all the manuscripts containing text from the Twelve Minor Prophets have been completely transcribed and uploaded onto the website, and so I’ve compiled them all into their respective manuscripts and names

Furthermore, due to the large collection of free PDF’s for download on the website, I’ve also created a new page that just contains links to all the available downloads on TWTY. Check it out here. It’s also available via the link on the sidebar to the right.

This will the last update with Dead Sea Scroll transcriptions for a while. Got a few other things on my to-do list that need doing

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Amos & Malachi Texts

Dead Sea Scrolls update time again. The short book of Malachi (3 Chapters) is contained in two Dead Sea Scrolls Manuscripts – 4Q76^a (4QXII^a) and 4Q78^c (4QXII^c), although neither of these two manuscripts contain any text from Chapter 1 (4Q78^c (4QXII^c) actually only has chapter 3 verses 6 & 7 extant, and then in fragmentary form!).

Amos however, containing 9 chapters, is a bit more complete among the Dead Sea Scrolls being contained in four manuscripts: 4Q78^c (4QXII^c), 4Q82^g (4QXII^g), 5Q4Amos (5QAmos) and Wadi Murabba’at (MurXII). These four manuscripts contain text from all of the 9 chapters, although not every word is extant. Nevertheless, Amos does come down to us from these 2000+ year old scrolls in a near-complete form

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Haggai Text

The short book of Haggai appears in three of the Dead Sea Scrolls Manuscripts – Wadi Murabba’at Minor Prophets (MurXII); 4Q77^b (4QXII^b); and 4Q80^e (4QXII^e). So as usual, I have transcribed and uploaded all three of them onto the website

(For people that haven’t realised, there are certain “key codes” for the Dead Sea Scroll’s Manuscripts. 4Q stands for “Fourth Qumran Cave” (so therefore “2Q” would stand for “Second Qumran Cave” and so on and so forth), and manuscripts with XII in their title stand for “Twelve” and so refer to “The Twelve Minor Prophets”).

Dead Sea Scrolls – Complete Zechariah Text

I’ve just finished uploading transcriptions of the 5 manuscripts that contain text from the book of Zechariah among the Dead Sea Scrolls: Wadi Murabba’at; 4Q76^a (4QXII^a); 4Q80^e(4QXII^e); 4Q82^g (4QXII^g); and Nahal Hever Greek Minor Prophets Scroll (8HevXII^gr).

As it happens, this therefore means that I’ve transcribed the whole of the Nahal Hever Greek Minor Prophets Scroll (8HevXII^gr), and so I have combined all of the transcriptions into one volume of the Nahal Hever Greek Minor Prophets Scroll (8HevXII^gr) in PDF form. Previous to the free transcription now available on TWTY, people’s only access to such a complete transcription would be if they bought the $175+ book Discoveries in the Judaean Desert: Volume VIII. The Greek Minor Prophets Scroll from Nahal Hever (8HevXIIgr), which is, as far as I’m concerned, far too expensive of a book to get.

Dead Sea Scrolls – Jonah Text

Transcriptions of all the Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts regarding the Book of Jonah should now be up on the website.

There are five manuscripts in total: Wadi Murabba’at (MurXII), Nahal Hever Greek Minor Prophets (8HevXII^gr), 4Q76^a (4QXII^a), 4Q81^f (4QXII^f), and 4Q82^g (4QXII^g). Pretty much nearly every single word of the Book of Jonah is extant. Well, at least every verse is accounted for

Dead Sea Scrolls – Zephaniah Text

I have now uploaded PDF’s of the text of Zephaniah as found in the Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts: Wadi Murabba’at; Nahal Hever Greek Minor Prophets 8HevXII^gr; 4Q77b/4QXII^b; 4Q78c/4QXII^c; and 4Q82g/4QXII^g. That’s now 4 of the 12 Minor Prophets completed, all with comparisons against the accepted text of the Greek Septuagint and Masoretic Hebrew

(As a little funny aside, I was reading along in The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible as I was doing Zephaniah, and in their introduction to Zephaniah, the scholars who did the translation start off with “The four short chapters of Zephaniah are well attested in the scrolls…” The funny thing is, there’s actually only three chapters in Zephaniah, not four )

Dead Sea Scrolls – Habakkuk Texts

All of the Dead Sea Scrolls Scriptural manuscripts regarding the text of the book of Habakkuk should now be online on the Research Page in PDF form.

There is an extensive Pesher text on the Book of Habakkuk (probably the largest Pesher text on one of the Minor prophets found at Qumran) which I may put online in the future, although there is a translation of the actual text in the Pesher to be found in Geza Vermes The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls In English for people to read
